'Blue Beetle': Angel Manuel Soto Hired To Direct The DC Superhero Film For WB

Years ago, DC Films and Warner Bros. unveiled an ambitious slate of films that were going to lay the groundwork for their DCEU franchise. We all know what happened next, as some of those films failed while others succeeded. At the end of the day, WB had to go back to the drawing board and expand its horizons for the future of DC Films. And with that, we’ve seen things like “Joker,” “Birds of Prey,” and the forthcoming James Gunn-helmed “The Suicide Squad.” And now, it appears DC Films is going even deeper in comic book lore for its next feature, “Blue Beetle.”

According to The Wrap, DC Films and Warner Bros. are moving forward on a new feature, “Blue Beetle,” with Angel Manuel Soto attached to direct. The film is said to follow the origins of Jamie Reyes, the third person to carry the Blue Beetle mantle in DC Comics. Reyes became the exo-suit wearing hero after discovering the Blue Beetle Scarab, which grafted to his spine and provides him with a powerful suit of armor to fight crime.

“It is an honor to direct ‘Blue Beetle,’ the first Latino superhero film for DC,” said Soto. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”

Soto is probably best known for his most recent film, the critically-acclaimed feature, “Charm City Kings.” The Puerto Rican filmmaker’s previous features include 2015’s “The Farm” and 2012’s “Frailty.” The “Blue Beetle” script comes from writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the person behind the upcoming “Scarface” remake.

It’s unclear when production on “Blue Beetle” might begin or if it is a film that is being developed for the big screen or for HBO Max, as we know WarnerMedia is excited about expanding its streaming brand, as well.
