British comedy is often known for its dry sensibility and can feel like an “acquired taste” for some. However, certain works can look like they have the potential for crossover appeal, regardless of where their audience may be from. Following its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, a new British comedy film is on the horizon. Produced by Rupert Majendie, directed by Jim Archer, and the feature film debut of screenwriters David Earl and Chris Hayward, the first “Brian and Charles” is now online to view.
The first clip from the film (see below), released back in January to correlate with its Sundance debut, looks to showcase a film that will have a unique quirkiness to it. Specifically, somewhere between goofy and earnest, a realist look with an overly exaggerated character at its core. It is also worth noting that “Brian and Charles” comes from a short film of the same name from 2017, with its writers, director, and lead actor all returning for the feature. That short film is available below too. Releasing in theaters this summer, “Brian and Charles” may be worth a look for those who like some tender storytelling alongside their laughter.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Brian and Charles” follows Brian, a lonely inventor in rural Wales, who spends his days building quirky, unconventional contraptions that seldom work. Undeterred by his lack of success, Brian attempts his biggest project yet. Three days, a washing machine, and various spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and has an obsession with cabbages. What follows is a humorous and entirely heartwarming story about loneliness, friendship, family, finding love, and letting go.
