Brad Pitt’s ‘Bullet Train’ Moves To July & Aaron Taylor-Johnson Says It’s Been “Hammed Up” Into A Comedy

It’s been several years since we’ve seen Brad Pitt in an action film, but the summer release of “Bullet Train” marks a return. Back in 2016, Pitt starred alongside Marion Cotillard in Robert Zemeckis’Allied” as married World War II operatives with secret identities. Before that, Pitt appeared in David Ayer’s searing World War II film “Fury” about a tank commander and his crew, which features gripping and graphic battle sequences.

Pitt might be best known for his turn in the married-assassins action-comedy “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” alongside his ex-wife Angelina Jolie. “Bullet Train” marks Pitt’s return to the action genre. Here is the official synopsis from Sony:

An original movie event, ‘Bullet Train’ is a fun, delirious action-thriller from the director of ‘Deadpool 2,’ David Leitch. Brad Pitt headlines an ensemble cast of eclectic, diverse assassins — all with connected yet conflicting objectives — set against the backdrop of a non-stop ride through modern-day Japan.

More stars round out the cast, including Sandra Bullock, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Andrew Koji, and Benito A Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny).

Taylor-Johnson recently said the film changed in tone throughout making it. “Originally, this thing was quite a dark, R-rated, vicious action piece, but we hammed it up and made it fun,” he told HERO Magazine recently in conversation with Andrew Garfield. “I don’t know what happened, but it became a comedy! We all just had a laugh. [Director] David was really open to playing and exploring; it felt like a big breath of fresh air — we had a fantastic time.”

Meanwhile, Deadline reports Sony’s announcement that the Columbia Pictures title is shifting its date from July 15 to July 29, previously held by the Dwayne Johnson DC superhero film “Black Adam,” which is now moved to the fall. “Bullet Train” will premiere alongside the horror thriller “Vengeance” from Focus Features and Paramount’s cartoon “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.”
