Charlie Hunnam Says "A Lot Of Things Went Wrong" During 'King Arthur' Including One Crucial Miscasting

Charlie Hunnam is an actor that is not shy about voicing his displeasure with things or pulling back the curtain a little bit more than your average movie star to talk about what is right and wrong with a project. Famously, he turned down “50 Shades of Grey” and was very open about why he left the franchise, walking away from a lot of money in the process. Well, in a new interview on SiriusXM, Hunnam opens up about another project he has second-thoughts about, “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.”

Unfortunately for Hunnam, he didn’t walk away from the project before filming. And upon its release, ‘King Arthur’ was universally panned by critics and was one of the biggest box office bombs of 2017. But when asked about that project, Hunnam was very upfront about his willingness to revisit the project and fix some of the issues that accompanied the Guy Ritchie-directed film.

“I’d like to go back to ‘King Arthur’ because there’s a lot of things went wrong during that and a lot of things that were out of our control,” he said. “I just don’t think we ended up matching the aspiration — we just didn’t quite make the movie we wanted. The idea was that if it was a success, we would’ve made several of those films, and I’m really captivated by the Arthurian legends and I just feel like we really missed an opportunity to tell a long-form story.”

He added, “There was a piece of miscasting that ended up crippling the central storyline. It’s actually not in the film anymore.”

Of course, he didn’t name any names or hint at who might have been miscast. Obviously, there will be plenty of jokes about the miscasting actually being Hunnam, but that’s not completely fair.

Hunnam gets a lot of flack for not being the best actor around, but when he’s good, he’s really good. Hunnam is just the type of actor that needs a really great script and a really great director to lead him. And if you’re a fan of “Sons of Anarchy,” then you know that he’s also able to do schlock pretty well too.

The actor’s latest performance is in the upcoming film “The Gentlemen,” which arrives in theaters on January 24.
