More than a decade after “Sons of Anarchy” ended its seven-season run, Charlie Hunnam is getting the gang back together—although not quite in the way fans might have expected. FX has ordered “Legends,” a limited series that reunites Hunnam with much of the original “Sons” ensemble for a meta-thriller in which the actors play versions of themselves.
Hunnam created and will write and star in the series alongside Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi, with additional casting still to come. Rather than resurrecting their “Sons of Anarchy” characters, the actors will reunite as themselves when the former cast gathers at a fan convention more than a decade after their series ended.
According to FX’s synopsis, that reunion takes a dangerous turn when “the line between life and art blurs,” and the fractured group faces a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they encountered on the show. In other words, “Legends” is less a traditional “Sons of Anarchy” revival than a self-aware action thriller built around the cast’s history together and the enduring fandom surrounding the series.
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” Nick Grad, FX Entertainment President, said in a statement. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
“Legends” was developed by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, who executive produce alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. FX Productions and 20th Television will produce the limited series. No director or premiere date has been announced yet.
Created by Kurt Sutter, “Sons of Anarchy” premiered on FX in 2008 and ran for seven seasons through 2014, with Hunnam starring as SAMCRO heir Jax Teller. The series became one of FX’s signature dramas and later spawned the spinoff “Mayans M.C.” The new project is particularly notable because Sutter is not among the creatives FX announced for “Legends”; this reunion instead originates with Hunnam himself.
“Legends” also brings Hunnam back to FX following his performance as Ed Gein in “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” which earned him Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Actor Award nominations. He is currently filming the BBC adaptation of John le Carré’s “A Legacy of Spies.”
FX has not yet announced when “Legends” will begin production or premiere, but the limited series is being developed for FX and Hulu.
