Ewan McGregor obviously had a great experience making his “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series, as the Scottish actor is gleaming with enthusiasm about a hypothetical return to playing the Jedi Master in any shape or form, and has even shared some ideas of where Old Ben could be going in the “Star Wars” universe.
We cannot really blame McGregor for having “Star Wars” on his mind as often as he does, given that his current wife, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, plays the live-action version of the “Rebels” character Hera Syndulla, now a New Republic general in the Dave Filoni series “Ahsoka.” Admitting that he’s reached out to Filoni and possibly wants to have Yoda in the mix.
“It was very casual, but I said there’s got to be something. Because Yoda’s somewhere else. After the end of ‘Episode III’, when we all go to the four or five corners of the galaxy — or however many corners it’s got! — I won’t have been in touch with him. But he’s out there. So I think there could be a story there where I’m trying to reach out to him,” McGregor told Variety while attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
McGregor also jokingly teased about Hera and Kenobi linking up, “I got very excited when Mary started working on ‘Ahsoka.’ I thought, maybe this is the big love story — Obi-Wan and Hera.” Then again, while McGregor believes that “time doesn’t really mean anything” in the various “multiverses” of Star Wars, he still understands that Kenobi and Hera “were in different time frames.” McGregor reiterated that he’d “be up” for returning in any feature or series where he could reprise the former Jedi character. “I enjoyed doing the series very much… and would be happy to do it again. I like playing him — he’s a really good character to play.” Granted, we should point out that Kenobi would be an Alec Guinness Force Ghost at this point in the timeline (that hasn’t stopped Filoni or George Lucas from tinkering with OG trilogy canon).
Speaking of “Ahsoka,” that show is now in its second season, with the premiere being announced last week at D23 Expo for January 20, 2027, and features his prequel trilogy co-star, Hayden Christensen, reprising the Anakin Skywalker role as a Force Ghost and in more flashbacks (the two got to reunite for the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series).
Hard to imagine that Filoni, the callback king, wouldn’t want to find a place for McGregor’s Kenobi, now that he’s helping to run Lucasfilm and seems to be calling the shots (although Disney ultimately makes the calls for budgets and projects these days). I’m sure they’ll eventually find something to do to bring Ben back.
