We haven’t had a directorial effort from Angelina Jolie since 2017’s “First They Killed My Father,” and so we’re ecstatic that she’s back with the period drama “Without Blood,” which is based on the acclaimed novel by renowned Italian writer Alessandro Baricco. The new pic coming out next month features an impressive lead cast that includes Salma Hayek Pinault, Demián Bichir, and Juan Minujin.
The Western project, hailing from Falco Ink and Brainstorm Media, has landed a new trailer and is described as “an unforgettable saga set in the aftermath of an unidentified conflict; it explores universal truths about war, trauma, memory, and healing.”
For those seeking more details about the story, here is the official synopsis of the original novel penned by Baricco via Amazon:
When – in an unnamed place and time – Manuel Roca’s enemies hunt him down to kill him, they fail to discover Nina, his youngest child, hidden in a hole beneath his farmhouse floor. After this carnage, Tito, one of the murderers, discovers Nina’s trapdoor. Enthralled by the sight of Nina’s perfect innocence, he keeps quiet. By the time she has grown up, Nina’s innocence will have bloomed into something else altogether, and one by one the wartime hunters will become the peacetime hunted. But not until a striking old woman calls upon a familiar old man selling newspapers in town can we know what Nina will ultimately make of her brutal legacy.

Jolie, Lorenzo Mieli, Lorenzo De Maio, and Simone Gattoni are set as main producers, with Roberto Malerba, Michael Vieira, Christian Vesper, Andrea Scrosati, and Elena Recchia serving as executive producers. Some of the other directing credits from Jolie include the emotionally driven WWII P.O.W. true-life tale “Unbroken,” starring a young Jack O’Connell; the broken-marriage drama “By The Sea“; and “In the Land of Blood and Honey.”
The Playlist reviewed “Without Blood” last year as part of our coverage of the Toronto International Film Festival. You can check out the new trailer for “Without Blood,” the latest effort from Jolie, which is being released nationwide on September 16.
