‘Charlie’s Angels’ Trailer: Elizabeth Banks Reboots Female Spy Series With Brand-New Angels

It has been 16 years since the last “Charlie’s Angels” film, but now in 2019, they are back and ready to kick more ass than ever before.

The angels now have a different look. No more Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore or Lucy Liu as we now welcome new angels Kristen Stewart (“Twilight” series), Naomi Scott (“Power Rangers”) and Ella Balinska (“Midsomer Murders”).

One major difference that will be seen in this reboot compared to its predecessors (including the 1976 ‘jiggle TV’ series) is the fact that the women’s sexuality will have less of an impact here, as shown in the marketing materials leading up to the release.

Speaking to Collider back in June, the director, Elizabeth Banks who also has a starring role, spoke of how she dismissed the sexuality of the angels. She said, “We play with that trope and then we dismiss it pretty early on in the movie. The women in this film use their brains and their wits. We had a mantra which was we are going to fight smarter, not harder.”

She continued, “the women in the film, for instance, I had another mantra on set which was everybody gets to wear what they feel awesome and comfortable wearing and what they want to strut around in in this movie. Whatever makes her feel best coming to set.”

Banks also spoke of what people will like about the movie, saying, “I hope that everybody who loved ‘Charlie’s Angels’ for the female camaraderie and the action and the fun factor, you’re going to get all of that and more with this movie.”

It doesn’t feel like a film that is going back to sexualizing women in order to sell tickets, Banks clearly has a vision for a film that is entertaining but can also showcase badass women as well as feel important to a younger generation, particularly women. The inclusion of a single by Ariana Grande, Miley Ray Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey hints at a more feminist stance the reboot is taking.

The angels return also sees the likes of Patrick Stewart (“Logan”), Sam Claflin (“Hunger Games”) and Djimon Hounsou (“Guardians Of The Galaxy”) starring in the action thriller.
