Chris Evans Posts Emotional Message To Fans After Wrapping 'Avengers 4'

O Captain! My Captain!

There has been a lot of speculation that Marvel Cinematic Universe fans will see the end of Chris Evans’ run as Captain American either “Avengers: Infinity War” or the upcoming “Avengers 4.” While we know that he’s very much alive and kicking at the end of ‘Infinity War,’ while the same can’t be said for half the universe, it looks like Evans’ days playing the Star-Spangled Avenger have come to an end, officially.

In an emotional post on Twitter, the MCU actor confirmed that he has indeed shot his last scene as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. Or has he? Well, as much as we’d like to consider this tweet part of the Marvel/Disney marketing machine, the sincerity is clear and sadly, like all good things, Evans’ Marvel days appear over.

Evans tweeted, “Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

Those who want to get angry and call this a monumental spoiler, you clearly haven’t been reading the writing on the wall. Evans has hinted, not-so-subtly, that he was through with his superhero-ing days on camera, at least for the foreseeable future. Unlike Robert Downey, Jr. (who probably will be Tony Stark until the day he dies), Evans has clearly been aching to get back to other creative endeavors, including directing.

Appearing as Steve Rogers dating back to 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Evans has appeared in 9 Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including three ‘Cap’ films as well as a total of 4 ‘Avengers’ outings, including next year’s “Avengers 4.” That’s a hell of a run, to say the least.

Even though the aforementioned RDJ seems to grab more headlines, Evans has brought life, and a ton of unexpected nuance, to a character that many originally wrote off as boring. The actor has elevated Captain America to becoming the heart and soul of the MCU. So, it definitely will be interesting to see how the films do without the good Captain.

“Avengers 4” hits theaters May 3, 2019.
