With Steven Soderbergh’s TV series project “The Knick” getting closer to production, music composer Cliff Martinez has recently revealed in an interview with Lost in the Multiplex that he’s been tapped to score the upcoming Cinemax show. Martinez has been a frequent collaborator of Soderbergh’s, tuning up ten movies to date (they last worked together on 2011’s “Contagion”). This would actually wind up being the second time Cliff Martinez provided a score for a TV show, the first being an episode of “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” over 25 years ago. As for “The Knick,” the Clive Owen-starring show is set in 1900s New York City and will center around the Knickerbocker Hospital and the surgeons, nurses and staff who did some amazing work without the techniques of modern medicine at their disposal. And needless to say, we’re intrigued by what Soderbergh will do in this new format.
In other composer news, Alberto Iglesias, perhaps best known for his work with Pedro Almodóvar, has signed on to score the upcoming drama “The Two Faces of January.” The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac, and is the directorial debut of screenwriter Hossein Amini (“Drive,” “Snow White and the Huntsman”). Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel (“The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Strangers on a Train”), the movie follows a con artist, his wife, and a stranger as they attempt to flee a foreign country after one of them is mixed up in the murder of a police officer. Aside from his work with Almodóvar, Iglesias is also known for his Oscar-nominated work on “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “The Kite Runner” and “The Constant Gardener.” “The Two Faces of January” is expected to be released next year.
