Cyborg Scarlett Johansson Jumps Into Action In First Full Length Trailer For 'Ghost In The Shell'

While “Ghost In The Shell” hasn’t quite shaken off the criticism that the Hollywood adaptation of the cult anime favorite is whitewashing the source material, the filmmakers have been offering the argument their approach has been to create a blockbuster that’s global in scale. Certainly, the casting bears that out as Scarlett Johansson is supported by an impressive international ensemble which includes Juliette Binoche, Takeshi Kitano, and Pilou Asbaek. And a thumbs up from the director of the animated films, Mamoru Oshii, doesn’t hurt either. But perhaps the ultimate reception to the movie will come down to how it turns out.

Director Rupert Sanders (“Snow White And The Huntsman“) is behind the camera for the high-tech tale about a cyborg facing a deadly enemy who wants her kind extinguished. Here’s the official synopsis:

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

“Ghost In The Shell” opens on March 31, 2017.
