Darren Aronofsky's Next Project Will Be A "Small Film"; DP Matthew Libatique Will Shoot It

Matthew Libatique is a busy cinematographer. He had “Birds of Prey” and “The Prom” come out this year, and is shooting Olivia Wilde’s next film, “Don’t Worry Darling.” Now, the two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer will reunite with frequent collaborator, Darren Aronofsky, for his next project.

In an interview with Rappler, Libatique teased the next project he has lined up after “Don’t Worry Darling” wraps. “I’m planning to make a small film with [Darren] Aronofsky that obviously I can’t talk about,” Libatique said. “But yeah, that’s the next thing for me.”

Libatique and Aronofsky have collaborated over the years since the two met in film school, resulting in such hits as “Pi” and Libatique’s first Oscar nomination for “Black Swan.” As for Aronofsky, the director usually takes a few years in-between his projects. The last film he directed was the (very underrated) “Mother!” which was already a smaller-scale movie compared to his previous effort, the $130 million “Noah.” The prospect of an even smaller film with Aronofsky’s weird tastes, à la “Black Swan,” is honestly too good to pass up.

The problem is that Libatique may not be available to shoot the project. As it was reported last month, the cinematographer is facing four years in prison for allegedly assaulting a first responder in Poland in 2018. Libatique is scheduled to stand trial in February, so it is unclear how all this may impact the project, which was reported to be getting much attention and pressure from the Polish Minister of Justice.

In the meantime, Aronofsky’s latest project is a documentary he produced, “Some King of Heaven” and it looks just like how you’d expect from an Aronofsky-produced documentary about retirement homes.
