The La Biennale di Venezia announced its lineup yesterday, and the main competition for the Golden Lion will be fierce, with new films from Danny Boyle, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Martin McDonagh, Casey Affleck, and more. Also in the competition lineup? Werner Herzog‘s long-gestating project “Bucking Fastard,” featuring sister actresses Kate Mara and Rooney Mara on screen together for the first time. What’s more, the film is Herzog’s first narrative feature in seven years.

Now, HanWay Films has a new clip from “Bucking Fastard,” about six weeks out from its world premiere; an official date will be announced shortly. The clip offers a preview of the film’s uncanny set-up: the Maras as Jean and Joan Holbrooke, two sisters who share such an intimate bond that they speak in unison, in this case, in the course of a criminal trial. Read on for an official synopsis, written in singular Herzog-ian fashion:
BUCKING FASTARD is about two sisters, Jean and Joan Holbrooke (Kate Mara, Rooney Mara), who are so close to each other that they speak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams. They even make the same slip of tongue in unison. We cannot see the world as they see it, but we do see how the world reacts to them – through the courts and the press, through those that want to help and those who want to use them, through the eyes of beasts both tame and wild, and even through their own echoes in the core of the earth.
Along with the Maras, “Bucking Fastard” also stars Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson. Herzog writes and directs the film. Producers include Clara Wu Tsai, Ariel Leon Isacovitch, Agnes Chu, Kieran Corrigan, Emanuele Moretti, Andrea Bucko, and Nick N. Raslan. Also of note, longtime Herzog collaborator Peter Zeitlinger is the film’s director of photography.
Stay tuned for an official trailer and world premiere date for “Bucking Fastard” as the Venice Film Festival gets closer to its opening night. Check out the clip from Herzog’s latest below.
