Filmmaker David Lowery To Helm The Fantasy Epic 'Green Knight' For A24

No matter what you think about David Lowery’s films, you can’t ever say that the filmmaker rests on his laurels, so to speak. With films like “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” “Pete’s Dragon,” “A Ghost Story,” and “The Old Man & the Gun,” the director likes to venture into new genres with each film. And judging by his next project, he’s set to do it again.

Deadline is reporting that Lowery is set to make a fantasy epic titled “Green Knight” as his next feature project. The film is a retelling of the medieval tale of Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, and the titular Green Knight. According to the famous story, Sir Gawain accepts the offer from the Green Knight to strike him. However, in doing so, Sir Gawain accepts that the Green Knight will strike him back but in one year and a day.

Previously, the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight legend had been told in two separate films, both directed by Stephen Weeks. The first film is 1973’s “Gawain and the Green Knight,” and then there’s 1984’s “Sword of the Valiant,” which starred Sean Connery.

As mentioned above, Lowery is coming off his latest film, “The Old Man & the Gun,” which stars Robert Redford in what may or may not be his final acting performance. Lowery had previously received critical acclaim for his films “A Ghost Story” and “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.” The outlier of his filmography is the Disney film, “Pete’s Dragon,” which is good for what it is, but wasn’t the massive success financially that the Mouse House had hoped for.

There’s no release date for “Green Knight” as of now, but we do know that Lowery is teaming with A24 to release the film.
