David Lowery Says 'Old Man And The Gun' With Robert Redford "Experimental" Like 'A Ghost Story'

KARLOVY VARY — Director David Lowery is currently on a global tour as his Sundance smash, “A Ghost Story,” prepares for release in a number of territories including the United States on July 7.  The filmmaker hasn’t gotten much rest, however, as his next project, “The Old Man and the Gun,” just completed shooting last month and he’ll immediately head back into the editing room when his ‘Ghost’ promotional duties are over.

Lowery has shown an unexpected versatility in his career. Not only has he been an editor and cinematographer for a number of other filmmakers, but his own movies have swung from the dark drama of “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” to Disney’s family friendly “Pete’s Dragon” to the experimental surrealness of ‘Ghost Story.’ Speaking at a press conference for the movie at the 2017 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Lowrey revealed that ‘Old Man’ will go in a different direction than his varied previous work.

“It’s a lot of fun. Again, we were trying new things,” Lowery says. “As much as ‘A Ghost Story’ feels like an experimental film in some ways to me ‘An Old Man’ feels experimental was well. Not because it has a character wearing a bedsheet, we were trying to have fun and do something lighthearted. I think all of us wanted to pay tribute to our lead actor Robert Redford because he’s been an inspiration to all of us at this table and we wanted to make a movie was in many ways a tribute to his career and the legend he is in the world of cinema. So, we’re working on that right now and, hopefully, it will be out sometime next year.”

‘Old Man’ also reunites Lowery with Casey Affleck (for the third time) and features an impressive ensemble cast including the aforementioned Redford, Elisabeth Moss, Sissy Spacek, Tika Summer, Keith Carradine, Danny Glover, Isiah Whitlock, Jr. and Tom Waits, among others.

‘Old Man and the Gun’ should hit theaters sometime in 2018.  “A Ghost Story” opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday.
