David Lynch Thinks The World Will Be “More Spiritual” & “Much Kinder” After The COVID-19 Pandemic

Normally, if a filmmaker talks about meditation, spirituality, kindness, and other existential ponderings, we may just write them off as a bit self-indulgent and self-serious. But if there was any creator on the planet that can talk about those things and keep us all on the edge of our seats, it has to be David Lynch. So, let’s take a look at what the man behind “Twin Peaks” and various other incredible projects has to say about the current COVID-19 pandemic and what it means for the future of our planet.

Speaking to Vice, Lynch began by talking about his new routine in a self-isolated, socially distant world. You are probably not too shocked to learn that filmmaking isn’t the top priority, as he discusses the importance of Transcendental Meditation (obvi) and how he’s currently in the process of making new light fixtures.

However, it’s when he talks about the pandemic’s effect on the future where Lynch begins to get a bit optimistic and spiritual.

“For some reason, we were going down the wrong path and Mother Nature just said, ‘Enough already, we’ve got to stop everything,’” Lynch said about the coronavirus outbreak. “This is going to last long enough to lead to some kind of new way of thinking.”

He added, “I think it’s going to be much more spiritual and much kinder and it’s going to bring us all closer together in a really strong and beautiful way. It’s going to be a different world on the other side and it’s going to be a much more intelligent world. Solutions to these problems are going to come and life’s going to be very good. The movies will come back. Everything will spring back and in a much better way probably.”

If only we all could share the optimism and hope that the director of “Eraserhead” and “Blue Velvet” feels right now.

For those of us stuck in isolation, Lynch does offer some suggestions for how we can pass the time.

“In the meantime, there are things that people can do at home,” he explained. “They can draw, they can paint, they can build small things, they can write lyrics, they can write poems, they can write stories that can later be filmed, they can play games, they can invent games. So many things can happen in a small space, they can invent new recipes and cooking things. It’s an opportunity for a bunch of different experiments.”

So, let’s all make David Lynch proud, okay?
