From filmmaker Hong Sang-soo, perhaps best known for his films “Hahaha” and “Right Now, Wrong Then,” “The Day After” is an absolutely beautiful film. As you can see in the trailer, the stark black and white cinematography adds something special to this story of a young woman who gets caught in the middle of a sordid affair and a case of mistaken identity. “The Day After” is yet another great, thoughtful film in the long career of the acclaimed Korean filmmaker.

As we mentioned, the film was chosen to compete at last year’s Cannes, and we were lucky enough to see the film. In our review, where we gave the film an incredible A-, we said, “’The Day After’ is all of these things and more, a soulful and profound story told in a distinct cinematic language that’s worthy of its own film academy.”

“The Day After” opens in New York on May 11, and in Los Angeles the following week, on May 18.

Here’s the synopsis:

South Korean Master Hong Sangsoo’s (ON THE BEACH AT NIGHT ALONE, CLAIRE’S CAMERA) 21st feature as director, THE DAY AFTER, is a mordantly comic tale of infidelity and mistaken identity. Book publisher Bongwan’s (Kwon Haehyo) marriage is on the rocks after his wife (Cho Yunhee) discovers the affair he’s been having with his assistant (Kim Saebyuk). Now that relationship is ending too and Bongwan’s new assistant, the sharp and sensitive Areum (Kim Minhee), on her first day in the office, is left to navigate the fallout of all the turnover in Bongwan’s life.
