'Deadwood' Star Claims "90% Chance" Feature Film Goes Into Production This Fall

For the last year or so, rumors have been swirling that a “Deadwood” feature film was coming sooner than later. We heard rumblings that it could happen as soon as this year. But then in March, series star Timothy Olyphant went on TV and said, in no uncertain terms, that there’s “no fucking way” the film was going to happen. And with that, all hope was lost. But guess what? Apparently, not only is it probably going to happen, but it’s way more likely than you realize.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, actress Robin Weigert, who played Calamity Jane on the critically-acclaimed HBO series, was asked about the possibility of a “Deadwood” film. Unlike Olyphant’s response, Weigert all but confirmed it was happening.

“It’s safe enough to say it’s happening this fall,” Weigert said. “There’s a set being built and tax incentives to get it done. A lot of [actors] have signed on. There’s a 90% chance it’ll finally happen.”

Obviously, there’s no word on a plot or release date, but this is the closest “Deadwood” fans have gotten to a confirmation that their beloved series will get the send-off they’ve been hoping for. For those who never watched the series, “Deadwood” was canceled without a proper ending. As mentioned, fans were clamoring for some way to finish the story. Originally, it sounded like there might be two films in the works. Then it was brought down to one. Last year, we heard rumblings that a script was finished. And now it appears that it could go before a camera in a few short months.

The next question is who all is coming back. One would assume that joining Weigert are Olyphant and Ian McShane. As for the rest of the ensemble, that’s anyone’s guess. But since this is probably the final chance to put a bow on one of HBO’s early outstanding series, most would probably jump at the chance.
