'Babylon': Damien Chazelle Adds 3 More Actors To The Cast Of His Upcoming Old Hollywood Feature

As someone, like you, who is obsessed with films and TV series and the creation of them, there are a ton of stories about actors landing career-changing jobs after years of thankless auditions and terrible projects. Well, I’m not someone that can predict the future, but I have to assume the upcoming film, “Babylon,” is going to be a career-defining moment for Mexican actor, Diego Calva.

According to THR, Diego Calva has landed a “critical” role opposite Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt in Damien Chazelle’s big-budget, old Hollywood feature, “Babylon.” The film is, by far, the biggest role in Calva’s career and is said to feature the actor playing a Mexican man attempting to climb the Hollywood ladder, starting first as an assistant and working his way up. Pretty meta role for a young actor that is looking to achieve star status in a Hollywood blockbuster, huh?

In addition to Calva, Chazelle is adding actors Jovan Adepo and Li Jun Li to the ensemble cast. “Babylon” is said to tell the story of Hollywood in the 1920s, as studios began transitioning from silent films to “talkies.” Originally, the film was going to feature Robbie and others portraying versions of real-life folks, such as Clara Bow. However, the report claims that Chazelle has moved away from that idea, focusing on fictional characters to tell his glitzy story.

THR says the chemistry reads between Calva and Robbie are what sold Chazelle on the casting. The biggest credit that Calva has up to now is an upcoming role on Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico.”

Filming is said to begin this summer in Los Angeles. “Babylon” isn’t expected to arrive in theaters until December 2022, right in time for peak awards season.
