Donald Glover Opens Up About Failed 'Deadpool' Series By Releasing A Script On Social Media

A couple days ago, it was reported that FX and Donald Glover had parted ways over the upcoming “Deadpool” cartoon that the actor/writer/director was working on with his brother Stephen. At the time, no reason was given, other than the classic, dreaded “creative differences.” Well, now we get Donald Glover’s side of the story, but it’s not exactly what you think.

You see, Glover decided to work out his recent split with FX on Twitter, in the form of a “Deadpool” script.

We must admit, at first, this looked like another attempt to stoke fan interest in a “Deadpool” property after it was killed. It worked the first time, when test footage for the “Deadpool” feature film “leaked” online and created an insane amount of fan interest in the Merc with a Mouth. What happened next is history. Lucrative, franchise-saving history.

But after reading the short script on Twitter, Glover clearly wrote this late at night, after getting the news from the network. His only message in the tweet was “for the record: I wasn’t too busy to work on Deadpool.” Following that tweet was a series of script pages that created a quick taste of what style Glover was working on with the character, as well as a way for Glover to work out his own feelings on the cancelation…with the help of Sudan, the last male white rhino.

The fourth-wall breaking Wade Wilson is hired to guard Sudan, while the male rhino is cruising around to find a worthy mate. During that time, Deadpool treats Sudan as his therapist, throwing insecurities, fears, theories, and everything else that’s bugging him (aka Glover) about why FX wouldn’t move forward with the series.

After throwing several reasons out there, commenting that it came suddenly after the network even enjoyed earlier scripts, Glover…err…Deadpool says, “What do I want?! I want to know why. I want the real story.” He continues, “It just feels like everyone wants something different, but no one wants to do anything different to get it. Doesn’t Marvel have enough feel-good minority shows everyone supports but doesn’t watch? I mean, I think our show woulda been funny. I just wanted a place to be honest. And I guess that place is Freeform.”

So, at the end of the day, audiences won’t get a chance to see what a “Deadpool” show created by Glover would have looked like, but at least we get a little taste. And honestly, after reading the hastily-written script, this version of “Deadpool” could have been exactly what FX and Marvel need, something unique and fun, but not a retread of what is in the film.

Sigh. Oh well. But at least we get “Cloak & Dagger,” right?
