Evan Peters Says 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix' Will Be "Powerful" And "Much Darker" Than 'Apocalypse'

If “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” (or is it going to actually just be called “Dark Phoenix?”) was releasing in November, like originally planned, we’d probably have a trailer for the film. However, the film was recently pushed back until February 2019, and because of that, we have yet to see any footage from the latest entry in the “X-Men” franchise. So, we actually have no clue what to expect from long-time X-Producer Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut.

In a recent interview with Collider, ‘Dark Phoenix’ star Evan Peters has talked a little about the superhero film, and specifically, what type of tone fans can expect. And judging by his comments, it’s going to be darker than “X-Men: Apocalypse,” but also have some comedy, like in “X-Men: First Class.” But it’s going to be dark. And it’s also going to be fun. But definitely not comedic.

You know what? Let’s just have Peters explain:

“I think it’s the classic ‘X-Men: First Class’ tone, where there’s a bit of humor thrown in there, but it’s much darker than the previous one, ‘Apocalypse.’ ‘Apocalypse’ was the ‘80s, so there was a lot of room for goofy stuff in there. This one is a much more serious film about the internal struggle of Phoenix and Jean, so it’s a dramatic film. There’s nothing very comedic about it, other than the few moments that are in there. I think it’s gonna be a powerful one. It’s ‘Dark Phoenix.’ I think it’s gonna be darker than we’re used to. It’s gonna be a change, but it’s gonna be fun for everybody.”

So yeah, it’s going to be “much more serious” and “powerful,” but also “fun for everybody.” Considering the last film featured the main villain Apocalypse destroying major cities all across the world, we’re not sure exactly how ‘Dark Phoenix’ plans on being “much darker.” And if it’s going to have a tone similar to ‘First Class,’ then it definitely won’t be as self-serious as ‘Apocalypse.’ Look, there are plenty of films that live in the gray area between being serious but having moments of levity. However, one could argue that “X-Men” has never been able to bridge that gap as effortlessly as other superhero films.

Of course, the source material is often regarded as the best “X-Men” storyline ever, so there’s a lot of pressure on the cast and crew to nail this film. However, judging by these comments, we’re not sure what to expect.

“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” will hit theaters on February 14, 2019. BTW, Alexandra Shipp has given a sneak peek at what Storm will look like in the new movie.
