Ezra Miller Shocks Fans With Appearance As The Flash During CW's 'Crisis On Infinite Earths' Crossover

After the subpar box office showing of “Justice League,” as well as the critical drubbing the film received, it seemed unlikely that Ezra Miller would return as the Flash anytime soon. Especially when you consider his proposed solo film has been in development for almost six years. Well, Miller’s Flash showed up on screen last night in a new story, albeit not where you’d expect to find him.

In DC Comics storytelling, the idea of a multiverse has been in existence for decades. Want to see a world where Superman is bad and turned into a global dictator? DC Comics has a universe for stories about that. Curious about a world where Thomas Wayne is Batman instead of his son, Bruce? There’s a universe for that.

Long story short, if you’re a fan of DC Comics, and superheroes in general, you’re likely familiar with the idea of multiple universes with multiple different iterations of heroes. This is why you shouldn’t have been too surprised that last night’s final installment of the CW crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths” showed multiple versions of The Flash, including a cameo from none other than Ezra Miller.

The very nature of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” a crossover based on the comic book series of the same names that saw heroes from various Earths come together to save the multiverse, lends itself to special appearances from different versions of established characters. And the previous four episodes definitely took advantage of that. However, no one really expected Miller’s version of Barry Allen, aka Flash, to show up on the CW.

In the scene, Miller’s DCEU Flash confronts Grant Gustin’s CW Flash in a sorta awkward, fun exchange where they basically point a finger at each other and go “I’m the Flash, so who are you?” That being said, there is a fun little tease that shows Miller’s Barry Allen finally taking the mantle of Flash after hearing Gustin’s character refer to himself. (You may remember that in “Justice League,” Miller’s character never calls himself Flash.)

Speaking to Variety, Marc Guggenheim (one of the creative minds behind the CW crossover) explained how the cameo came about:

“I got a phone call from [Warner Bros. boss] Peter Roth saying, ‘I know you’re locked, but can you put Ezra into the crossover?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’ And he said, ‘How, you’re series wrapped? And you’re wrapped on the crossover.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I know, but if you’re telling me Ezra Miller can be in the crossover, I can make it happen.’ I called Eric Wallace who is the showrunner of ‘Flash,’ and he called up Grant Gustin — because the one thing that was our only concern was the thought we didn’t want to do it unless Grant was 100 percent on-board with it. And he was. He was incredibly enthusiastic and on-board with it. And then we got on the phone with Ezra Miller and told him the scene I had written and he was completely into it. And we just went.”

Overall, it’s a cute cameo and a fun way to integrate the DCEU film series with the CW shows that run concurrently. If nothing else, it gave Ezra Miller one more chance to put on the suit.

“The Flash” series currently airs on CW. “The Flash” film is supposedly going to hit theaters on July 1, 2022 (though we’ll believe it when we see it).
