Farrelly Brothers Continue Being Ridiculously Idealistic In Fancasting- Want Johnny Depp For 'Three Stooges'

The Farrelly Brothers are people who never let a film die, and they aren’t going to let absurd fancasting get in the way of their dreams. Perhaps you’ll remember their long flirtation with “Stuck On You,” where they pitched to the studios multiple permutations of Woody Allen, Will Smith, Jim Carrey and Chris Rock in the leads. They ended up with Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear as the conjoined twins, not exactly fascinating names in comparison, but surprisingly ended up with their best overall film, one that will still look fresh in time compared to the dumbass theatrics of “Dumb and Dumber” or the sexual cruelty of “There’s Something About Mary.”

They’ve been even more persistent with their longstanding hopes to make a “Three Stooges” movie, talking up pretty much every A-Lister under the sun. However, with a start date looming, and a fall release date set, they had better get moving. JustJared reports, however, that they haven’t gotten past their ludicrous fancasting stage. Reportedly they want Johnny Depp as Moe and Oscar winner Sean Penn to star as Larry (perhaps in his “Carlito’s Way” outfit). They have no Curly in mind, apparently, though previous hopes on the Farrelly’s part pegged Russell Crowe for the role, so it’s possible we might have the most serious, intense Stooges yet.

Whatever the case, either they’ll have to rush-shoot this thing or the affair’s been postponed because the brothers have opted to tackle the Jonas Brothers comedy “Walter The Farting Dog” instead. Not sure how A-Listers of Depp and Penn’s stature will feel working with the Farrelly’s now- when “Stuck On You” was casting, they were only five years removed from “There’s Something About Mary,” whereas now, will Sean Penn really want to suit up for directors who recently made “The Heartbreak Kid” and a Jonas Brothers movie about a flatulent pet?
