'Stranger Things' Star Finn Wolfhard & Carrie Coon In Talks To Join 'Ghostbusters' Sequel

Rumors and speculation surrounding the upcoming Jason Reitman-helmed “Ghostbusters” sequel are that the film was going to feature young teens in the main roles, in a “Stranger Things”-esque style. So, if you’re a producer that wants your next “Ghostbusters” film to feel like “Stranger Things,” why not just go and nab the star of the show?

According to Variety, that’s exactly what Sony is going to do. The report says that Finn Wolfhard (aka the “Stranger Things” kid) is in talks to star in the still-untitled “Ghostbusters” sequel. In what might be the most obvious casting of the year, we can probably expect Wolfhard to bring the same vibe to this new franchise that he’s brought to both the hit Netflix series and the recent “It: Chapter 1,” which was also influenced by “Stranger Things.”

If it sounds like we’re dogging this choice, understand that we believe Wolfhard is a fine actor and one of the best young stars out there. It’s just…obvious. And a little uninspired, don’t you think? The report says that Reitman was initially apprehensive about the idea of using “Stranger Things” actors but was blown away by Wolfhard’s audition. So, hey, maybe this worry is for naught.

Now, there is a bit of good news with this report. Apparently, Sony is interested in adding Carrie Coon to the cast of the film as well. This is a great idea, depending, of course, on how she’s being used in the film. Coon is an accomplished actress that has starred in films like “Gone Girl” and “Widows,” as well as a star-making turn in an early season of FX’s “Fargo.”

As mentioned, these announcements are full of mystery, as we really don’t know anything about the upcoming “Ghostbusters” sequel’s plot. Will Coon play Wolfhard’s mother? Is Coon the younger sister of Egon, making the young actor, the driving force of the reformation of the Ghostbusters? We shall see.
