Gareth Edwards Says 'Rogue One' "Doesn’t Unfold How You Think," VFX Supervisor Neil Scanlan Praises "Brave" Film

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is unusual in that we know pretty much how it will end… namely, at the beginning of “Star Wars: A New Hope.” The chatter flying around has been that the film wraps up mere minutes before George Lucas‘ original movie begins, but that hasn’t been officially confirmed yet and it’s probably safe to say we’ll have to wait until we’re in theaters before we find out. Still, all those ingredients might give you a preconceived notion of how ‘Rogue One’ will play out, but director Gareth Edwards suggests otherwise.

“Even though we’re not telling the story of Luke Skywalker, it was important to me that we capture the same themes and emotion,” he told USA Today. “But the film doesn’t unfold how you think. It’s not the same path as ‘Star Wars.’ ”

Indeed, VFX supervisor Neal Scanlan has praised the film for precisely being something different than we’re used to from the “Star Wars” universe.

“What’s amazing and exciting about ‘Rogue One’ is that Gareth Edwards, who is a young dynamic guy, took on this huge responsibility of taking on this next film. And I think what he’s done is incredibly brave. He sort of threw the rule book out of the window and came at it from his own unique stance. It’s respectful to the genre, but brave enough to put his own twist on it,” he told Yahoo. “For that reason, there is quite a unique and exciting feel to this film that we maybe haven’t seen before.”

There’s still over a month to go until the movie opens, but the excitement levels are certainly rising. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” arrives on December 16th.
