'Girls Of The Sun' Trailer: Filmmaker Eva Husson Returns With A Tale Of Brave Women Fighting Back Against Extremists

As we approach the 2019 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, we are still awaiting the formal release of some of last year’s competing films. One such film is the thriller “Girls of the Sun,” which is finally hitting theaters next month.

As seen in the first trailer, “Girls of the Sun” follows the true story of a group of brave women that fought back after being captured and used as sex slaves. These women banded together to take the fight to their oppressors, using machine guns and whatever other means necessary to bring justice. As mentioned, the film is inspired by a true story, and even features a character that is inspired by the real-life journalist Marie Colvin (who was portrayed by Rosamund Pike in another 2018 film, “A Private War”).

“Girls of the Sun” is written and directed by Eva Husson. Her previous film “Bang Gang” screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. ‘Girls,’ on the other hand, was selected as a Palme d’Or-competing film at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The film stars Golshifteh Farahani, who has shown up in scene-stealing roles in the recent films “Paterson” and “The Upside,” along with Emmanuelle Bercot, who is probably best known for her award-winning role in “My King.”

“Girls of the Sun” opens theatrically on April 12.

Here’s the synopsis:

Somewhere in Kurdistan, Bahar (Farahani), commander of the “Girls of the Sun” battalion, is preparing to liberate her hometown from the hands of extremists, hoping to find her son who is held hostage. A French journalist, Mathilde (Bercot), comes to cover the attack and bear witness to the story of these exceptional warriors. Since their lives have been turned upside down, the Girls of the Sun find themselves fighting for women, life, and liberty.
