Tom Holland Was Hesitant To Make Another ‘Spider-Man’ Until Destin Daniel Cretton Pitched A “More Personal Story” Alongside New Creative Input

Actor Tom Holland (“The Odyssey”) seems to have had a lot more creative say on the upcoming “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” We assume part of this is new to the contract after re-upping with Marvel Studios for their co-production collaborations with Sony Pictures and producer Amy Pascal, and finding the right way into new installments is going to be more important moving forward. There seemed to be some minor question if the original versions of “Spider-Man 4” were floating his boat before director Destin Daniel Cretton (“Wonder Man,” “Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings”) was brought in with his own ideas for it.

Speaking with ABC‘s “Good Morning America,” Holland spoke about his reasoning WHY he connected with the version that Cretton crafted/ptiched on a personal level and reveals that he was able to get himself in the writers’ room, adding to the optics that Holland has a much more creative footprint in what we believe is going to the start of a second trilogy (we don’t know for sure if we’re getting two more installments with Holland or not, just an assumption given how much these movies make at the box office).

“I was hesitant because I would describe myself as a fan first when it comes to the MCU and Spider-Man. And I was really keen to make sure that we made a movie for the right reasons rather than just, ‘These movies are doing really well. Let’s churn out another one.’..It wasn’t until I really sat down with Destin, our director, and he pitched me ideas of how he wanted to make a more personal story that I really felt like we were investing in the character in a way that the fans would really respond to.”

“Yeah, they let me into the writers’ room, and it was a fascinating experience. I was so lucky. I guess I didn’t realize the power I have as Spider-Man, because I would pitch an idea, go away for a week, come back, and they’d be like, ‘Here’s your idea.'” That’s not it, Holland’s brother came in to share one of the main ideas they used on the superhero sequel: “[My brother] came up with this idea that I went into the studio the next day and pitched as his idea. I did not take credit for it. But also, I said that because I was worried it was a bad idea.”

Previously, Holland has talked up the idea of taking on a producing role, even after his tenure as Peter Paker/Spider-Man and wants to help mentor the next actor, as he’s been signaling an endorsement for live-action Miles Morales to join the MCU (Donald Glover playing his Uncle Aaron/The Prowler in “Homecoming” and had a cameo in “Beyond The SpiderVerse“) and has mentioned Owen Cooper (“Adolescence”) as the next Parker. The box office expectations couldn’t be higher, as the last outing, “Now Way Home,” made a massive $1.921 billion, and we’re sure that Sony is hoping that this one with Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) is going to be able to get close to those numbers.

Anywho, you can watch/listen to that exchange with Holland on GMA below. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swings into theaters on July 31, which isn’t that far away, so you’d better grab your tickets, as seats for the opening weekend screenings seem to be getting gobbled up quickly.
