Golden Globes Announcing A Week Before Oscar Nom Voting Deadline

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association still hasn’t set a broadcaster for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, but there is officially a date.  As expected, the organization revealed the 76th edition of the Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, Jan. 6.  The nominations will be announced a month earlier on Thursday, December 6.

The telecast should once again pop up on NBC, but the HFPA is still in negotiations with the network.  Variety reports they are discussing an eight-year deal with a “significant” bump in the rights fee which previously stood at $21 million per year.  That tells you how strong the advertiser demand is for live events considering the awards staple dropped 5% to just 19 million viewers last year, it’s smallest viewing audience since 2012.  Word is CBS and FOX were also interested in snagging the long running awards show from NBC.

Seth Meyers hosted the Globes this past year.  Jimmy Fallon hosted in 2017.  There will likely be little news on a host for the 2019 shindig until NBC’s deal is finalized.

The Jan. 6 date also makes the Globes a very powerful promotional tool in the Oscar race.  For the third year in a row the telecast will take place not only before ballots are due but a number of days before.  In 2019 it’s over a week with eight days between the telecast and the deadline.  There were only five days for the HFPA’s selections to have an impact this past year.  Many consultants and studios believe the Globes impacted last minute voters over those five days.  How many voters wait to vote until close to the deadline is debatable, however.

Notably, the SAG Awards pushed its nominations announcement to December 12.  Traditionally, the SAG nods would be revealed two days before or two days after the Globes.  The 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards will be handed out on Sunday, January 27.

The granddaddy of them all, the Oscars, no longer has the Winter Olympics to avoid and will be announce on Sunday, February 24.
