It seems that Theresa “Tree” Gelbman just can’t catch a break. Theresa had to relive her birthday over and over and must go through more hell. But apparently, what she went through in the first “Happy Death Day” doesn’t compare to what she’ll go through in the sequel.
“Happy Death Day” became a surprise hit upon its release. It also received praise for its fun, simplistic premise. It’s essentially “Groundhog Day” meets “Scream” and it works quite well. In “Happy Death Day 2u,” though, Theresa will learn the origin of the time loop she lived through.
After “Happy Death Day” became Jessica Rothe’s breakthrough, it’s nice to see her return as Theresa. With Theresa, Rothe gave us a new kind of horror heroine. A protagonist who is quite thorny yet still likable. Now, we’ll get to see how many more layers the character will be given. Also returning are Israel Broussard as Theresa’s boyfriend, Carter, and surprisingly, Ruby Modine as Lori. Lori was *Spoiler Alert* revealed as the killer at the very end and got killed off. So, her return will be intriguing, to say the least. The time loop from the first film will likely play into her revival.
Christopher B. Landon, the director of “Happy Death Day,” is once again at the helm which should be a confidence builder. He’s also penning the script this time around which might be another good sign. When you have a sequel to a film that may not need one, it’s best to have the person that really understands the material.
As for new faces, there’s Suraj Sharma who had his breakthrough with the 2012 epic “Life Of Pi.” Also, newcomer Sarah Yarkin joins the cast. They look to be exciting additions to what is an interesting sequel.
