'I May Destroy You' Teaser: Michaela Coel Writes & Stars In This New HBO Drama Series

The idea of consent is something that has been discussed more and more in recent years. Of course, it’s always been an issue that should have been taken very seriously, but the idea of explaining consent and understanding what it really means is something that has spawned from the #MeToo movement. And now, that idea is given the full dissection in the upcoming series “I May Destroy You.”

The series, which is written, created, and produced by Michaela Coel, features the story of a woman (also played by Coel) who finds herself the victim of a date-rape drugging. The next day, unaware of what happened, with a wound on her forehead, she must attempt to put the pieces back together to see what exactly happened when she blacked out.

The series stars Coel alongside Weruche Opia (“Inside No9”), Paapa Essiedu (“Kiri”), Aml Ameen (“Yardie”), Adam James (“Belgravia”), Sarah Niles (“Catastrophe”), Ann Akin (“Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams”), Harriet Webb (“Plebs”), Ellie James (“Giri/Haji”), Franc Ashman (“Peep Show”), Karan Gill (“Flesh & Blood”), Natalie Walter (“Horrible Histories”), and Samson Ajewole.

“I May Destroy You” arrives on HBO in June.

Here’s the synopsis:

A fearless, frank and provocative half-hour series exploring the question of sexual consent and where, in the new landscape of dating and relationships, the distinction between liberation and exploitation lies. Set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Michaela Coel), a carefree, self-assured Londoner with a group of great friends, a boyfriend in Italy, and a burgeoning writing career. But when her drink is spiked with a date-rape drug, she must question and rebuild every element of her life.
