Dwayne Johnson & Issa Rae Developing A Backyard Wrestling Series For HBO

If you went to random strangers on the street and tasked them with naming popular projects starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, you’d probably get pretty far without someone talking about “Ballers.” However, the HBO series ran for 5 successful seasons and only recently ended its run last year. But because Johnson doesn’t drive fast cars or jump off of buildings in the sports-focused series, it doesn’t have the same cultural cache as ‘Fast & Furious’ or his other action films. Well, that isn’t stopping Johnson from continuing his partnership with HBO, as he is set to team with Issa Rae and his wife, Dany Garcia, for a new series.

According to Variety, Johnson, Rae, and Garcia are teaming up to produce a new series about backyard wrestling, tentatively titled, “TRE CNT” (or “TRE COUNT”). The series is set to follow a young dockworker named Cassius, who uses his inheritance to start up a hip-hop-centric backyard wrestling organization in Houston. The new series is written by Mohamad el Masri, who is probably best known for his work on series such as “October Faction” and “Here and Now.” He’s also a producer on the upcoming Apple TV+ series that stars Brie Larson as a CIA operative.

Obviously, a series about backyard wrestling is going to have a lot more attention with Dwayne Johnson attached. Previous to his massive acting career, he was one of the most popular professional wrestlers in history. He’s still better known as The Rock, which was his moniker in the WWE.

Issa Rae is probably best known as the writer-producer-creator of HBO’s “Insecure,” but lately she’s been starring in more high-profile films such as “The Photograph,” “Little,” and the upcoming Netflix comedy, “The Lovebirds.”

There’s no production start date for “TRE CNT.”
