It's Up To You Paramount: Ben Stiller Says 'Zoolander 2' Script Has Been Handed In, Awaiting Reply

While Paramount rejected plans for an “Anchorman 2,” Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux have been hard at work to the sequel of their own hit comedy, “Zoolander.” For much of last year, the project played second fiddle to the Will Ferrell vehicle, but no matter, as Stiller and Theroux have been plugging away at the script. But catching up with Empire recently, the former revealed that the script is done, in the hands of the studio and now it’s up to them to decide what happens next.

“Where it’s at is we’ve completed the script, Justin Theroux and I, and handed it into the studio,” he told the mag. “Now the studio has the script and we’re at that point where we’re waiting to see what they want to do. It’s ten years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s basically Derek and Hansel ten years later – though the last movie ended on a happy note a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them. Will Ferrell is written into the script and he’s expressed interest in doing it. I think Mugatu is an integral part of the Zoolander story, so yes, he features in a big way.”

The plot details are more or less the same as they have been for the past little while, though Mugatu as the villain is more solidified now (Theroux played it a bit cagey in the fall) and really, it’s up to Will Ferrell to say yes (and we don’t doubt that he will).

So….what now? Online petitions? A march outside Paramount headquarters? A letter campaign? Nah. Paramount are likely crunching the numbers to see what it’s going to cost to produce the film and bring back Stiller, Ferrell and Owen Wilson into the fold. But they shouldn’t have any doubts about whether or not people want this. They do. Okay, at least we do. For now, we’re gonna fire up “Zoolander” once again this weekend. Don’t let us down Paramount.
