'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Trailer: Jaegers Return To Face A New Threat

After a somewhat underwhelming Comic-Con Teaser Trailer, Universal has released the first full trailer for the sequel “Pacific Rim Uprising”. The film follows John Boyega’s Jake Pentacost, the son of Idris Elba’s character in the first film, as he pilots a Jaegar to, of course, fight off a new horde of Kaiju. Scott Eastwood also joins the franchise as Nate Lambert, another Jaegar pilot.

While details are still scarce about the film’s plot, the first “Pacific Rim” was an amazingly ridiculous film in which Guillermo Del Toro let his inner child run wild. He smashed monsters and robots together with glee, so our hopes are high that “Pacific Rim Uprising” will be just as good. One cause for concern, however, may be how the final film differs from what Del Toro had in mind when he was attached as director. Here’s the official synopsis:

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious‘ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

The film marks the feature film directorial debut of Steven S. DeKnight, who has been working in TV for quite a while showrunning both Starz’s “Spartacus” and the first season of Netflix’s “Daredevil” after Drew Godard left the project. DeKnight co-wrote the screenplay based off an idea by Del Toro. While Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi will reprise their roles, “Pacific Rim” star Charlie Hunnam will be absent because of scheduling conflicts. “Pacific Rim Uprising” will be released on February 23, 2018.
