James Gunn Is Sad That Martin Scorsese Is "Judging" Marvel Films Without Seeing Them

Social media is a fascinating tool. In its relatively short existence, the platform has linked millions upon millions of people from all around the world, allowing for communication that has never been possible in the history of humanity. But social media is also a pretty terrible place in 2019, with discussion quickly turning to arguments and devolving into insults and hatred. And this is something that James Gunn quickly learned today when he decided to comment about Martin Scorsese explaining that Marvel films “ are not cinema.”

Gunn went on Twitter today and shared his thoughts on Scorsese’s recent comments. And the “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker was quickly met with some…emotional responses.

“Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favorite living filmmakers,” tweeted Gunn. “I was outraged when people picketed ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way.”

He added, “That said, I will always love Scorsese, be grateful for his contribution to cinema, and can’t wait to see ‘The Irishman.’”

As is the case with every basic tweet in 2019, these comments were met with angry fans that immediately jumped on Gunn for “comparing” Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation’ to the multitude of Marvel Studios films.

“For those tweeting me I’m somehow saying zealots picketing ‘Last Temptation’ is the same as Scorsese judging my films, I’m not,” he clarified. “What outraged me about the picketers at the time of ‘Last Temptation’ is NOT that they thought the film was blasphemous. Nor that they were picketing. Doing those thing are within their rights. What bothered me was that 99% of them were doing it without having seen the movie.”

Ultimately, you can see this whole discussion as silly and inconsequential, as there is a Presidential impeachment inquiry ongoing, as well as an abundance of violence and starving people across the world. However, considering James Gunn makes superhero movies (with some of those coming from Marvel), you can’t blame the guy for wanting to point out that Scorsese should maybe watch the films before criticizing an entire genre.

Alas, on social media, particularly “Film Twitter,” if you somehow speak out against Scorsese, you’re likely to get beaten to a pulp, like a character from the legendary filmmaker’s work. So, perhaps Gunn will remember that for next time.

UPDATE: These tweets were deleted, so I’ve included a screenshot to show they’re existence.
