Jason Segel Teases ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ Sequel Alongside Dream To Do Full Version Of ‘Dracula’ Puppet Rock Opera: “I’ve Got An Idea”

Jason Segel has been mostly focused on his acclaimed comedy series “Shrinking” and recently co-starred with Samara Weaving in the domestic horror flick “Over Your Dead Body“; however, he may circle back to the world of 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” in the future. The Nicholas Stoller-directed and Judd Apatow-produced pic that Segel wrote and starred in, which saw him trying to get over a break with his actress girlfriend (Kristen Bell) in a very scenic resort in Hawaii and eventually strikes up a romance with a hotel employee (Mila Kunis), what would a sequel look like 20 years later?

Briefly speaking with The Direct, Segel shared his ongoing interest in fleshing out his “Dracula” puppet musical (we only got a taste of it in the movie) for the big screen and teased having an “idea” for a follow-up to “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” but stopped short of expanding upon what that would look like.

“We have been talking about it; I will tell [you]. That’s all I can say. Yeah, every once in a while, I get an itch, and I get my puppet, because I have him, and I go perform live somewhere. But I still dream of doing that musical. I have an idea for how to do it, too. So, we’re getting there,” Segel said of putting together a full version of the puppet horror rock opera. When it comes to a second “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” sequel, he was a little more mum, even with his tease, “It would all be one thing [with the musical]. I got an idea. I have an idea.”

Over the years, we’ve long considered it one of the better comedies from the Apatow family, although Segel had some trouble keeping that trajectory going after projects he wrote, such as “Five-Year Engagement” (co-starred with Emily Blunt) and “Sex Tape” (co-starred with Cameron Diaz), didn’t exactly receive the same reception. However, with his Emmy-winning mental health series “Shrinking,” it’s hard to deny that he’s cemented his mark on comedy, and we’ll be extremely happy to see him back making his own movies again (alongside Seth Rogen‘s recent muses about coming back to filmmaking after his experiences with “The Interview“).

The original movie featured some future comedy royalty with supporting roles such as Paul Rudd (as a dude-bro surf instructor), Jonah Hill (as a surly server), Bill Hader (the brother of Segel’s character and one of the musical puppeteers), and Kristen Wiig (as a Yoga instructor at the hotel). It would be completely up in the air if any of those characters would return for this potential sequel, although giving Hader a bigger role would be super fun.

With all that said, we’re very doubtful that disgraced omedian/podcaster Russel Brand would be even asked to return (his character got a spinoff with “Get Him To The Greek“) given multiple rape and sexual assault allegations and inserting himself into the world of alt-right conspiracies (making him a PR nightmare for any future follow-up).
