Now that ‘Rise of Skywalker’ has been released on all platforms for what feels like 10 years already, the dust has settled on Disney’s “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, and we can maybe begin to take stock of what worked and what clearly didn’t. And we can also discuss what might have been, such as with the unmade ‘Episode 9,’ tentatively titled “The Duel of the Fates,” which is a story that actor John Boyega thinks could have better suited his character, Finn.
Speaking to Yahoo, Boyega was asked about the concept art that was released months ago, showing some key moments from what would have been Colin Trevorrow’s “Star Wars” Saga finale. And in particular, Boyega talked about one image that showed Finn holding a blue flag, apparently ready to lead the Rebels into a battle. It’s a moment that definitely didn’t happen in ‘RIse of the Skywalker,’ and that’s something Boyega wishes could have been different.
“I think Colin Trevorrow was going to tell that story,” Boyega said. “That image of Finn with the blue flag, and you have the AT-ATs lined up with tribal marks, and the stormtroopers take off their helmets. That would have been sick! That would have been dope, man, hands down.”
As those comments illustrate, Boyega is one of the few “Star Wars” actors associated with the newest films that has been outspoken with his issues with the sequels. As fans rightfully noticed, Finn was a clear example of a character that had a fairly strong beginning in ‘The Force Awakens’ but was completely sidelined in subsequent films, never fulfilling the promise of what could have been. And because of that, Boyega feels he is right in criticizing those films and how they treated his character.
“I felt it was important for me to talk about a truth that is embarrassing to talk about,” he explained. “We all know that what makes roles so lucrative [are] the moments you give them. If Captain America isn’t given the scenes to boost his representation, and to make him enjoyable for you guys, we won’t think he’s cool. Why shouldn’t Black characters and Black actors also fight for that same kind of representation? I think it’s a done deal with that.”

It’s clear from his comments that Boyega has learned some valuable lessons from his time doing “Star Wars.” Obviously, the franchise has given his career a massive boost, and he’s a household name because of it. However, judging by those comments, Boyega also learned what franchise filmmaking is really about, especially behind-the-scenes. We’ll just have to see if that is a lesson he’ll take with him in future projects.
