‘King Kong’: James Wan Teaming With Disney+ For A New Series Set On Skull Island

Every so often, Hollywood decides that it is time to reboot the “King Kong” franchise. Obviously, there are all the attempts at telling the original “King Kong” story. That was done in 1933, then in 1976, and most recently, 2005 by Peter Jackson. Then you have the more adventurous attempts to show Kong in his element like 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island.” And now, it appears Disney is ready to take a swing at the ‘Kong’ franchise with a new streaming TV series.

According to Variety, James Wan and his Atomic Monster production company are teaming with Disney+ to bring a new “King Kong” series to the streaming service. The show is set to be written and produced by Stephany Folsom, who recently worked on Amazon’s series, “Paper Girls.” Unlike the classic Kong tale, where the overgrown ape is taken from his home and taken to the US, the new streaming series will take place on Skull Island and highlight some of the mysteries of his homeland.

This is far from the only Kong-related project on the horizon. Obviously, there are the Legendary Monsterverse films, which began with ‘Skull Island’ and most recently included “Godzilla vs. Kong.” It’s unclear what would be next from that franchise, but obviously, those films have been a big success for Legendary. Then Netflix is supposedly working on an animated series that takes place on Skull Island. Neither of those would be related to whatever Disney is working on with its “King Kong” series.

Obviously, it’s far too early to know when this show might begin production or even show up on your streaming screens. But it appears that King Kong is ready for yet another reboot with Mickey Mouse footing the bill this time.
