'Godzilla & The Titans' Series Taps 'WandaVision' Director Matt Shakman

After the success of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” released during the pandemic, the Monsterverse continues to chug along. Warner Bros. recently announced it’s moving forward with director Adam Wingard’sGodzilla vs. Kong 2,” which just added British actor Dan Stevens (“The Guest”) in a mystery role and will begin filming later this year in Australia.

While we’re awaiting news for solo Monsterverse films, Legendary announced a live-action “Godzilla” series earlier this year, and it’s now added a high-profile director.

A new report from Variety has revealed that Matt Shakman, hot off of being selected to helm “Star Trek 4,” is set to direct the first two episodes of “Godzilla & The Titans” for Legendary and Apple TV+.

While the show is expected to focus on Monarch, the global agency tasked to study and track titans worldwide, it’s unclear if any of the established actors who appeared in the films will be part of the Monsterverse spinoff series. Some of those actors included the Sally Hawkins and “Toyko Vice” actor Ken Watanabe, along with others.

Shakman is no stranger to television, having worked on “WandaVision,” “Game of Thrones,” “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” “Mad Men,” “Succession,” and “The Great.” His string of credits highlight that the director has a keen sense of humor and could inject a little personality into a franchise that isn’t exactly known for memorable human characters.

At the moment, it’s unclear how this news directly impacts the production of “Star Trek 4.” Paramount announced during their big investor day event that the film would begin shooting before the end of 2022. However, it was later revealed that the cast had no idea the studio was planning a fourth “Star Trek,” resulting in the studio losing all leverage against their ongoing salary demands.
