Thanks to plenty of buzz out of the Cannes Film Festival, where Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrosso won the Best Director award, “La Bola Negra” may be one of Netflix‘s top award season contenders this year. Now, ahead of its late Fall theatrical and streaming release, here’s a new trailer for the queer epic, which charts nearly a century of Spanish history, from the 1930s to today, through the lives of three men.
Calvo and Ambrosso adapt an unfinished novel of the same name by Spanish author Federico García Lorca for the film, as well as Alberto Conejero‘s play “La piedra oscura.”
Spanish music star Guitarricadelafuente leads Calvo and Ambrosso’s movie in his acting debut, alongside “Elite” actor Miguel Bernardeau. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close.
Along with directing, Calvo and Ambrossi co-write the film’s screenplay with Conejero. The pair also co-produces the film with Jorge Pezzi.
As noted earlier, “La Bola Negra” premiered in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Critics loved the film, including The Playlist, and our review awarded it an A-. Read the review here.
Netflix will give “La Bola Negra” a limited theatrical release on November 6 before it premieres exclusively on the streamer on December 4. Watch a trailer for the film below.
