Oscar-Nominated Composer Mica Levi To Score A24's Sundance Film 'Zola'

Names like Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Alexandre Desplat, and Danny Elfman are constantly brought up when film fans name some of the best composers working in the medium. But in recent years, Mica Levi has not only made a name for herself as an accomplished composer but an argument exists for her being the best around. And thankfully, in 2020, we’re guaranteed at least one new Levi-scored film, with A24’s “Zola.”

According to Pitchfork, Levi is responsible for the score for the upcoming drama “Zola,” which is set to premiere in January as part of the Sundance Film Festival. Even without the news that one of the best film composers in the world is doing the music, there was already a lot of buzz surrounding “Zola,” based on the talent involved and the strange path the true story had on its way to the big screen.

“Zola” is perhaps the first film to be adapted from a thread of tweets. The story follows a young woman named Zola who meets another woman named Jessica at a restaurant. What follows is an incredibly wild tale that feels far too good to ever be real, but according to a famous thread of tweets, that’s exactly what happened.

The film stars Taylour Paige and Riley Keough, respectively. “Zola” is directed by Janicza Bravo, who is probably best known for her work on films such as “Lemon” and TV series like “Atlanta” and the recent Amazon show, “Forever.”

Levi is probably best known for her Oscar-nominated score for “Jackie” and her acclaimed work on the film “Under the Skin.” In 2018, she wrote the music for the underseen film “Monos,” which is easily one of the best works of the year.
