'Morbius' Is Delayed Again: 'Spider-Man' Spinoff Film Now Arriving In April

2022 is upon us, but here’s some news that will bring you back to the glory days of 2020 and 2021—Sony has delayed the theatrical release of the ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film, “Morbius.” Yep, that’s right, just a matter of days before the release of the Jared Leto-starring “Morbius,” the studio has decided to delay the film until the spring.

According to Deadline, “Morbius” has moved from its January 28 release date and will now hit theaters on April 1. A specific reason for the move wasn’t announced, but the report claims Sony is worried that the January release date for “Morbius” would have taken away from the box office legs of the massive hit, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which is currently over $1.3 billion moving into the new year.

“Morbius” tells the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who does an experiment on himself to help cure a disease. However, when things go awry, Dr. Morbius is given vampire-like powers, including the desire to feast on human blood. The Marvel character is often seen appearing in ‘Spider-Man’ comic books, and the film’s marketing has already shown the film exists in some sort of universe related to the Wallcrawler.

As mentioned, the delay is far from the first one for the film. Originally set for July 2020, the film has been delayed primarily due to COVID concerns with more than a half-dozen moves throughout 2020 and 2021. But maybe, just maybe, this date will stick.

The film stars Leto alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Daniel Espinosa is the director. As mentioned, the film is supposed to be Sony’s next big ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff franchise, following in the footsteps of “Venom.” We’ll have to see if the release date juggling that has plagued the film will hamper any of those lofty expectations.

As of now, “Morbius” is set to arrive in theaters on April 1, nearly two full years after the original July 2020 date. Hopefully, the seventh date is the charm for this film.
