Forget 'The Irishman,' Adam Sandler's 'Murder Mystery' Is The Most Popular Release On Netflix In 2019

Like it or not, Netflix is the prime destination for many consumers hoping to find the very best in film and TV. And with the hundreds and hundreds of hours of original content released over the last year, you’d think that subscribers would have plenty of choices and somehow find the very best the streaming service has to offer. You know, films like “Atlantics,” “The Irishman,” “I Lost My Body,” and “Marriage Story.” Sadly, as we’ve now learned from the official rankings released by the streaming service, subscribers are much less interested in those films than they are with the latest from Adam Sandler.

According to the official rankings, the most popular release from Netflix in 2019 wasn’t any of those aforementioned acclaimed films. Instead, the most viewed release is actually “Murder Mystery,” starring Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Yeah, let that sink in. Netflix subscribers decided to watch “Murder Mystery” more than the latest from Noah Baumbach, Martin Scorsese, and Mati Diop.

When you look at the rest of the top 10, there are shows and films that you might expect like “Stranger Things 3,” “The Irishman,” and “The Incredibles 2.” But “Murder Mystery” is far from the only surprise in the list. “The Witcher” has apparently been a huge hit already, ranking as #6 on the list (#2 on the Most Popular Series list). Also, “6 Underground” is already the #3 Most Popular Release in the US (#2 Most Popular Film).

And for those looking for “quality cinema,” Scorsese’s “The Irishman” ranks #5 Most Popular Release of 2019 (#4 Most Popular Film).

Of course, it’s important to note that the streaming service doesn’t release any numbers or specific criteria for how it ranks “popularity.” Clearly, there is something more than just a total number of streams, as “The Witcher” and “6 Underground” have only been on the service for less than two weeks. The disclaimer at the bottom says that the data is based on predictions of views. So, you can take these lists for what they are — Netflix-produced lists of popular series and films on its own service with no oversight.

But hey, it’s fun to debate, right?
