Netflix Changed The Ending Of 'The Notebook' And Fans Aren't Happy

Do you want to know how to really piss off a bunch of UK film fans? Take a beloved Nicholas Sparks novel-turned-film, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and instead of the bittersweet, emotionally devastating ending, give viewers a happy ending. That’s exactly what Netflix did with “The Notebook,” and PEOPLE. ARE. MAD.

According to multiple people on social media, the ending of “The Notebook” has been altered on Netflix UK. And not just in a way that is inconsequential, either. Apparently, the film’s ending was cut down so much that it changes the entire emotional sequence of events.

For those not super familiar with “The Notebook,” here’s what you’re missing out on. The film is about a man who narrates his personal love story to his elderly companion, in a way to hopefully conquer her dementia. The majority of the film is told through flashback, with Gosling and McAdams as the couple who falls in love.

However, the ending of the film is largely viewed as one of the most emotionally wrenching in all romance films, with the elderly couple dying in each other’s arms after the woman becomes lucid again. Upon seeing this moment, anyone with a heart will instantly burst into an ugly cry and forever be changed by the overwhelming love they feel for Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. That is, until Netflix went and ruined it.

In the Netflix UK version, the film ends without showing the couple dying and apparently cuts to birds flying over a lake, robbing people of any sort of complex feelings and giving them more of a typical happy ending.

As you might expect, this is not what fans of the film want.

Netflix hasn’t stated why/how this change occurred and why they would rob people of their ugly crying.

Anyway, for those out there that aren’t able to see the true ending to the film, here you go:
