Netflix Giving Alfonso Cuarón's 'Roma' A Special 70mm Release In January

We’ve already said quite a bit about Alfonso Cuarón’sRoma.” The Netflix-distributed film became a big story in 2018, as it was seemingly pulled from Cannes, premiered to incredible reviews at Venice, and it’s Oscar chances forced Netflix to completely change it’s release strategy for films, giving the black & white feature an exclusive run in theaters before debuting on the streaming service last week. And kicking off 2019, it appears “Roma” will get a renewed spotlight, as Netflix announces a 70mm release.

That’s right, the film that probably should be viewed on the biggest screen possible (please no phones) is getting a release in the massive 70mm format. Netflix is bending over backward, giving “Roma” special treatment, as the awards season kicks into full gear. And with the apparent demand (we don’t have actual numbers) of film fans wanting to see “Roma” on the big screen, it looks like the streaming service is going to do everything it can to help fans experience Cuarón’s latest in the best possible way.

“‘Roma’ is designed to be meaningful whether experienced at home or on the big screen but offering cinema lovers the opportunity to see it in theatres is incredibly important to me,” said Cuarón. “The 70mm print of ‘Roma’ shows unique details not available on any other version. Being shot in 65mm, these prints bring live detail and contrast only possible using a big format film. It is for sure the most organic way to experience ‘Roma.’”

Cuarón shot his acclaimed film on the Alexa65 digital camera, mastering at 4K resolution. FotoKem, the only remaining 70mm print lab worldwide, handled the transfer from digital to film, as well as the production of 70mm film prints. Needless to say, there’s a lot of care that went into this transfer.
