Nicole Kidman Reunites With Jane Campion For Season Two Of ‘Top Of The Lake’ (Update)

Nicole Kidman, Jane Campion

UPDATE 9/18: Premiere magazine now reports that Campion has confirmed with them directly that Kidman will appear in "Top Of The Lake" season two."Nicole Kidman will in season two of ‘Top of the Lake.’ I am working on scripts and I have a role for her," the director said.

UPDATE: Vanity Fair say that Kidman’s publicist has reached out to say that the story isn’t true. Did the interviewer get mixed up between "Top Of The Lake" and "The Flamethrowers"? Or is a deal not yet closed properly? We’re sure it’ll become apparent soon.

Our favorite TV series of the 2012/2013 season, Jane Campion’s “Top Of The Lake” was just an absolute treat from beginning to end. Taking the mystery/crime genre and embellishing it with texture, spectacular performances from Elisabeth Moss and Peter Mullan (among others), gorgeous photography and great direction both from the “Piano” helmer and Garth Davis, it’s one of the absolute must-sees of the golden age of television.

The show did well enough both at home and abroad that Campion’s been working on a second series, and it now emerges that some serious A-list talent will be coming along, as in an interview with the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye promoting her appearance on stage in London in “Photograph 51,” Nicole Kidman has revealed that she’ll be joining the next run of the series.

Long before she was an Oscar winner, Kidman worked with Campion on 1996’s “The Portrait Of A Lady,” and says that the filmmaker had written a role especially for her, though there are no specifics on the role, other than that she likes to play “odd people, who live odd lives.” The actress hinted a few months back that she was going to be working again with Campion, though we’d assumed at the time it was on the filmmaker’s adaptation of Rachel Kushner’s “The Flamethrowers.”

Other than Kidman, Elisabeth Moss is the only other actor confirmed to return, with her Detective Robin Griffin investigating a case both in her adopted home of Sydney and in Hong Kong. It’s not Kidman’s first brush with premium TV drama (she was in “Hemingway & Gellhorn” for HBO a few years ago, and she’s set to star in “Big Little Lies” with Reese Witherspoon for the same network), but this is coming first, once she’s finished with her stage run and wrapped on John Cameron Mitchell’s “How To Talk To Girls At Parties.” Filming’s set to begin in December, so we’ll hopefully be seeing it on screens before the end of 2016.
