‘Nola King’ Becomes ‘Frisco King’: Taylor Sheridan Will Write All Of ‘Tulsa King’ Universe Expansion Starring Samuel L. Jackson

The new Paramount+ crime drama starts production in late March in Fort Worth and gives Sheridan full-season writing duties for the first chapter of the “Tulsa King” extension.

Taylor Sheridan, the Oscar-nominated writer, director, and executive producer behind “Landman” and “Lioness,” is set to write all eight episodes of the first season of “Frisco King,” the upcoming Paramount+ spinoff set in the “Tulsa King” universe and starring Samuel L. Jackson, the streamer announced this week.

The series—previously known as “Nola King,” before a creative overhaul set it in Frisco, Texas— is produced by Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, and production is scheduled to begin in late March in Fort Worth, Texas. Paramount+ also said Jackson’s character, Russell Lee Washington Jr., was first introduced in the third season of “Tulsa King,” which premiered in September on the platform.

That assignment is a notable signal on its own. Sheridan has become one of the defining creative engines of Paramount+’s scripted slate, but having him write every episode of a new franchise extension starring Jackson gives “Frisco King” a heavier authorial stamp than many spinoff rollouts get out of the gate.

Matt Thunell, president of Paramount Television Studios, underscored that point, saying, “We are honored to have Taylor Sheridan write the first season of Frisco King and bring to life Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character.” He added, “Having him pen all episodes of the season with his singular voice will be a treat for fans of Tulsa King and audiences around the world.”

Jane Wiseman, head of originals at Paramount+, framed the move as part of Sheridan’s broader run at the company, saying, “Taylor Sheridan continues to build worlds that attract some of the most iconic talent working today, and Frisco King is no exception.” She continued, “Having Samuel L. Jackson step into this universe is a testament to the scale and ambition of the storytelling Taylor is crafting. We’re thrilled to expand this storyline with such a powerhouse creative team and cast on Paramount+.”

The series is executive produced by Sheridan, Sylvester Stallone, and Jackson, alongside a larger producing team that includes David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Christina Alexandra Voros, Michael Friedman, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and Keith Cox. That structure keeps “Frisco King” closely tied to the existing “Tulsa King” operation while giving Jackson’s corner of the franchise room to stand on its own.

The timing also lines up with a broader expansion push at the streamer. Paramount+ said “Tulsa King” recently ranked among Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming Originals for eleven consecutive weeks in fall 2025, and the company positioned “Frisco King” alongside newly greenlit titles including “Fear Not,” “9/12,” and “Discretion.” It’s a clear franchise-and-brand play: keep Sheridan’s ecosystem moving, keep recognizable stars inside it, and build new branches off proven audience momentum.

Meanwhile, Sheridan’s expansion push isn’t stopping at television. In adjacent news, he has also landed a book deal with Simon & Schuster for “How to Not Die in Prison,” a debut title co-written with Tom Nelson that is slated for a June 23, 2026, release—an unexpected side lane for a creator whose Paramount-era footprint is already spread across multiple franchise series.
