Fourteen is already an age built around escape. In Fernando Eimbcke’s “Olmo,” getting out of the house for one party becomes much more complicated when a boy’s struggling family needs him at home.
The Playlist is exclusively debuting a new clip from the charming, bittersweet coming-of-age film, which stars Aivan Uttapa as Olmo, a Mexican-American teenager growing up in 1979 New Mexico. With his father Nestor (Gustavo Sánchez Parra) confined to bed by an illness, Olmo, his mother Cecilia (Andrea Suárez Paz), and his sister Ana (Rosa Armendariz) must divide the family’s daily caretaking responsibilities.

Olmo would rather spend time with his best friend Miguel (Diego Olmedo) and impress his next-door neighbor Nina (Melanie Frometa). When Nina finally invites him to a party on a day he has been left alone with his father, the teenager begins scheming his way out of the house, setting off a journey of mischief and chaos.
But Olmo’s desperate attempt to escape his responsibilities eventually forces him to confront what he has been running from. The family home may contain his deepest pain, but it is also where he begins to find solace and understand the people who have been carrying that pain alongside him.
Eimbcke, the Mexican filmmaker behind “Duck Season,” “Lake Tahoe,” and “Club Sandwich,” directed “Olmo” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Vanesa Garnica.
Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Eréndira Núñez Larios, and Michel Franco produced the film. Brad Pitt, Caddy Vanasirikul, and Yuri Chung serve as executive producers.
