‘One Battle After Another’ Is New York Film Critics Circle’s Best Film Of 2025

The members of the New York Film Critics Circle practically telegraphed their Best Film winner for weeks. If it weren’t Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” we would have been concerned for the mental well-being of many NYFCC members who have championed it. That also meant there were very few surprises overall when the members became the first major critics group to make their year-end selections.

The group sent in a different direction for Best Director, selecting Jafar Panahi for “It Was Just An Accident.” Panahi won Best Director, Original Screenplay, and International Film at the Gotham Awards less than 24 hours ago.

“Battle” also saw Benicio Del Toro take the Supporting Actor trophy. Amy Madigan won the Supporting Actress honor for another Warner Bros. release, “Weapons.” Rose Byrne won Best Actress for “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,” while Wagner Moura took Best Actor for Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent,” which also won International Film.

Screenplay went to Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for the very New York-centric “Marty Supreme.”

After taking the equivalent honor at the Gotham Awards last night, “My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow” won the organization’s prize for Non-Fiction Film. In a minor surprise, “KPop Demon Hunters” won Animated Film. Cinematography went to Autumn Durald for “Sinners.”

The National Board of Review will reveal its top picks tomorrow, while the top West Coast critics, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, select on Sunday.
