At this point, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is becoming the main connective tissue of the new DC Universe. After making his live-action debut as the belligerent Green Lantern in “Superman” and returning for “Peacemaker” Season 2 and the upcoming HBO series “Lanterns,” Fillion will bring the character into animation next.
“Mister Miracle” showrunner Tom King confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Fillion will reprise the role in DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation’s adult animated adaptation of King and artist Mitch Gerads’ acclaimed comic-book series.
“We brought Nathan into ‘Mister Miracle’s’ show, and doing that, it’s just so wonderful,” King said. “He brings that energy to every aspect of it. And you would think it would be different tonally from ‘Lanterns,’ but it blends because that’s who Guy is. He’s that guy who is over the top. We all know that guy who’s a little bit like that.”
Fillion is the first cast member officially confirmed for “Mister Miracle,” which was greenlit in June 2025. The series centers on Scott Free, the celebrity escape artist known as Mister Miracle, and his wife, the formidable warrior Big Barda. Both were raised on the brutal planet Apokolips but escaped to Earth, only to find themselves drawn back into the cosmic war between Apokolips and New Genesis when Scott’s adoptive father, Darkseid, obtains the Anti-Life Equation.
King is writing every episode and serving as showrunner, while Gerads is involved as a producer and designer. King previously described “Mister Miracle” as a full-fledged DCU project with “huge implications” for the larger interconnected universe. Casting remains underway for Scott Free, Big Barda, Darkseid, and Orion.
The decision to retain Fillion across live-action and animation reflects James Gunn and Peter Safran’s original plan for DCU actors to play their characters in multiple mediums. It also makes Guy Gardner one of the franchise’s most frequently recurring characters, with Fillion now attached to four separate projects.
Before entering the animated world of “Mister Miracle,” Fillion will next appear opposite Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan in “Lanterns,” which premieres Sunday on HBO.
“Mister Miracle” currently does not yet have a premiere date, but given Fillion’s casting, 2027 doesn’t seem out of the question.
