Paul Bettany is now learning the hard way what might happen if you tease something for Marvel fans and then never follow through. For weeks, fans have been trying to figure out who might be showing up on “WandaVision,” as Paul Bettany teased a massive mystery actor was going to show up. He even went so far as to say it was someone he’s been wanting to work with for years and they had “fireworks” on set. Was it going to be an ‘X-Men’ character or maybe someone from ‘Fantastic Four?’ Well, fans started to call shenanigans when it was revealed in the most recent episode that there’s a second version of Vision played by Paul Bettany that was shown. But the actor wouldn’t really troll fans with a joke about acting opposite himself, would he?

Well, apparently he would.

Speaking to Good Morning America, the hosts asked Bettany about the cameo and if it is in fact a reference to acting opposite himself.

“Yeeaahhhhh,” replied Bettany sheepishly. “You know when you think something is going to be funny and you say it and actually panic about it? Which is what I did because fans started guessing who it might be and they were guessing people like Benedict Cumberbatch or Patrick Stewart. And I was thinking, ‘My God, that’s a good idea! They’re going to be so disappointed when they find out it’s me.’”

When asked if maybe he was trolling the hosts now and he’s really hiding the secret cameo, he said, “I’d love to answer that question but my service keeps cl-…” as he begins to fake like his Zoom connection is breaking up.

The unfortunate by-product of all this hype is that people had already written such great headcanon for what they believed would happen, but it appears to be bunk. From the looks of it, Bettany was just being silly and it got taken literally by fans. Now, he might feel the wrath of fans who are expecting something massive and not getting what they hoped for. Oops.

The finale of “WandaVision” debuts tomorrow. You can watch the entire exchange about the cameo debacle below:
